MTBE A 'LIKELY' CAUSE OF CANCER (EPA, July 11/05 )
A EPA ( EWG Public
Affairs ) draft risk assessment says MTBE, the gasoline additive that
has contaminated drinking water in at least 29 states, is a "likely" human
carcinogen, according to agency sources. An EPA official who reviewed
an earlier version of the document told Environmental Working Group (EWG) that
the risk assessment's most notable finding for the first time links MTBE to
cancers such as leukemia and lymphoma, with toxicological endpoints similar to
known carcinogens such as benzene and butadiene. Previously, EPA had classified
MTBE as a "possible" cause of cancer, and concerns about contamination centered
on the fact that in small doses its foul stench renders water
undrinkable.

New study suggests fetuses are exposed to hundreds of toxic chemicals
(By TERENCE CHEA, Associated Press Writer, Friday, July 15, 2005)
A new study challenges the long-held belief that fetuses in the womb
are largely protected from dangerous chemicals in the
environment.
Laboratory tests of the umbilical cord blood of 10
newborns found that the samples contained an average of 200 chemicals that
can cause cancer, brain damage, birth defects and other health ailments,
according to the study sponsored by the Environmental Working
Group.

Bad News For Babies: Research Links PVC Plasticizer To Genital
Deformities (Bill Walsh, National Coordinator Healthy Building Network, June 17,
2005)
This article draws heavily from studies, analysis and commentary
available on the searchable databases at www.ourstolenfuture.org
[1]
According to their manufacturers, the principle use of a class of chemicals
known as phthalates (pronounced thall eights) "is to soften the popular plastic,
polyvinylchloride" (known as PVC or vinyl) used in building materials such as
flooring, wall covering, upholstery, and shower
curtains. [2]
This month, for the first time, researchers have demonstrated a highly
significant relationship between a mother's exposure during pregnancy to
phthalates and changes in the ways that baby boys' genitals develop, including
smaller penis size and incomplete testicular descent. [3] The U.S.
Centers for Disease Control has previously established that phthalate exposure
is widespread in American women, and a 2003 study revealed a link between one
phthalate compound and preterm birth. [4]
Also this month, a first-of-its-kind study released by Harvard University
scientists found that babies in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) receiving
intensive therapy with PVC medical devices, such as IV bags and tubing, were
exposed to a phthalate at very high levels — an average of 25 times higher
than the general population and up to 50 times higher for the most exposed. As
their medical treatments intensified, the sick infants were exposed to
progressively higher exposures of Di(2-ethyl hexyl) phthalate or
DEHP.
Phthalates come in many different formulas. Most haven't been tested or
examined at all for human health impacts. The Consumer Product Safety Commission
has noted that one phthalate formula common to certain building materials
— DINP [5] — is a mixture of up to 100 chemical variants, of which
only five have been minimally studied. [6] Others have been found to pose a risk
of serious negative health impacts at very low doses.
The new studies about harm to developing fetuses and newborn babies from
phthalates are not conclusive. However, they reinforce the findings from other
studies that have revealed associations between phthalates and human
reproductive systems, such as reductions in semen quality detected in three
studies between 2000 and 2003. [7] One showed DNA damage in sperm. Two
others found reductions in sperm quality in men with slightly
elevated phthalate levels. These are consistent with laboratory results studying
the effects of phthalates in animals, although they suggest that humans may be
more sensitive than rodents. [8]
Phthalate levels associated with the damage in those studies were well
within the range experienced by many Americans. [9] The subjects all were men
exposed to background, environmental levels of phthalates, not higher
occupational levels. In March of this year, an analysis of ordinary household
dust for seven chemicals found that phthalates accounted for 90% of the chemical
concentration in the aggregate sample. [10]
Like the human carcinogens vinyl chloride and dioxin, phthalates are
uniquely associated with PVC. [11] It's this triple threat from PVC that
distinguishes it as the worst plastic for environmental health and green
building. (Please click on read more)

Krank durch Notebooks (Heise.de 2.6.05)
Durch Notebooks verursachte Haltungsschäden waren vor Jahren noch
unbekannt – zu gering war die Verbreitung der gegenüber Desktop-PCs
meist deutlich teureren mobilen Begleiter.

EPA Sets Standard For Toxic Fuel Component in Environment
Folks, hard to imagine in this wacky world, our government would need to
set an acceptable standard for perchlorate -- a toxic chemical used to make
rocket fuel -- but they did late last week.
The Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) limit of 24.6 parts per billion
(ppm) in drinking water was determined to guide Superfund cleanups and whether
the goverment should regulate perchlorate as a contaminant of drinking water.
However, the EPA's preliminary ruling two years ago on perchlorate -- 1 ppm --
was considered too stringent by the Pentagon.
As you well know, perchlorate has been linked to thyroid problems and is
considered to be particularly dangerous to children. And, the Natural Resources
Defense Council believes that increased limit the EPA set is too low and won't
protect those most vulnerable to it: Babies and pregnant women.
Moreover, that higher standard could put millions of people living near
Superfund and military sites at great risk. To that end, California and
Massachusetts have proposed limits on perchlorate contamination far more
restrictive than the current new EPA level.
With clean water so crucial to your health, it's about time you give up tap
water and start filtering your home's water supply.
Just don't think drinking bottled water will help you sidestep the problem,
however. Some bottled water is no cleaner than tap water. The contain way more
bacterials and soem of them especial the once consider really heathy for you
because thy coem form mineral source even might contain Arsenic.

Exercise helps Alzheimer's
A new study by researchers at the University of California, Irvine
discovered a regular exercise program can slow the development of Alzheimer's
disease by altering the way damaging proteins reside in the brain. Scientists
studied the effect of excess clogging due to plaque buildup in the brain after
three months on genetically engineered mice.
Half of the mice tested by researchers were put in cages with running
wheels and the remainder had no outlet for exercise. By all appearances,
exercise was the deciding factor:
Mice in the exercise group learned to navigate a water maze more quickly
than those without an outlet.
- The exercisers also had significantly fewer plaques and fewer bits of
beta-amyloid peptides, physical signs also associated with
Alzheimer's. -

nature for many people. But few of those with homeopathic remedies in their
cupboards know that they have a German physician to thank for the remedies. This
weekend, supporters of homeopathy are celebrating the 250th anniversary of the
birth of Samuel Hahnemann - the man widely accepted as the founder of
homeopathy.

Studies Cast Doubt on Use of Calcium in Some Cases (ANAHAD O'CONNOR,
April 28, 2005)
Despite what doctors have long recommended, regularly taking calcium and
vitamin D does not prevent fractures in older people who have broken a bone or
who have osteoporosis, according to two large studies released
yesterday.
People with osteoporosis are often encouraged to consume as much calcium
and vitamin D as possible to strengthen their bones and to lower the likelihood
of injuries.
But the new studies, involving thousands of elderly people in Britain who
had symptoms of the disease, found that those who took calcium and vitamin D
tablets were just as likely to break a bone as those who took
neither.

Diminishing Mercury's Horrible Damage to Your Brain (Dr. Joseph Mercola,
4/22/05)
A new study posted online in Environmental Health Perspectives (see free
EHP link below) appears to diminish the damage thimerosal -- the
ethylmercury-based preservative in vaccines -- can do to our children, according
to a news release issued by the National Autism Association. Although the
National Institutes of Health study on primates showed how ethylmercury was much
more damaging because it crosses the blood-brain barrier more quickly than
methylmercury, EHP framed the results in a deceptively positive light,
emphasizing, " Injected thimerosal reacted differently from methylmercury in
that it cleared from the infant [blood] much more quickly." (read

Why Don't the Amish Have Autistic Children? Washington Times April 19,
2005
A United Press International (UPI) reporter went out to search for
autistic children in Lancaster County, the heart of Amish country in
Pennsylvania. Based on national statistics there should have been as many as 200
children with autism in the community. Instead, he only found three.
One was a young girl who had been brought over from China, adopted by one
family only to be given up after becoming overwhelmed by her autism, and then
re-adopted by an Amish Mennonite family. The second definitely had received a
vaccination and developed autism shortly thereafter. The reporter, however, was
unable to determine the vaccination status of the third child.
A quote from the mother of the adopted autistic child speaks volumes: My
husband just said last week that so far we've never met a family that lives a
healthy lifestyle and does not vaccinate their children that has an autistic
child. We haven't come across one yet.
Folks, you don't have to be a medical doctor, hold advanced epidemiology
degrees or teach molecular genetics to figure this one out. You don't even need
a degree in rocket science. How much more obvious could it be?

Senate Bill Voids State Laws, Prohibits Health and Safety Warnings and
Undermines Your Health Rights and Your Privacy
We do need to take action on this now. This is real, folks, hidden
in an Anti-Terrorism bill. This form is simple. Please take the
few minutes to contact your legislators through the link below. This
bill says that we can't sue if we are damaged by a vaccine or drug. It
also says that drug manufacturers don't have to tell us about the
dangerous side-effects of drugs. This legislation is quite unbelieveable.
Beth
It is no secret that the pharmaceutical industry is the
largest contributor to Congress and that there are almost two drug
company lobbyists for every Member of Congress. This bill has the support
of and is a major priority of some of the highest ranking and
most influential Senators. The only way we will defeat this bill and
sustain our health rights is if you and all of your friends, neighbors,
family and colleagues take action today!

New Study Finds Vinyl Plasticizers a Major Contaminant in Household Dust
- Chemicals From Common Products Create "Toxic Cocktail" in Homes, by Margie
Kelly, Healthy Building Network's Communications Coordinator, March 22,
2005
Toxic chemicals common to home furnishings and electronic equipment have
been found in household dust, including chemicals internationally recognized as
harmful or toxic to the immune and reproductive systems; babies and young
children are particularly at risk from exposure. That is the finding of a new
report released today, Sick of Dust: Chemicals in Common Products, which
investigated six classes of chemicals in dust samples taken from 70 homes in
seven states across the U.S. [1] Among the chemicals documented in household
dust are two -- phthalate plasticizers and organotin stabilizers -- that are
ubiquitous in PVC vinyl building materials.

A couple of hours after lighting the candle, I developed a headache and felt
unwell. I tried it again the next day and the same thing happened.

Reasons to Breastfeed Your Baby
Builds your baby's immune system Improves your baby's brain
function Reduces obesity Helps your baby's emotional health
Lowers a mother's cancer risk and other health conditions Helps
mothers return to pre-pregnancy weight faster Saves time and
money
If you haven't made the choice to breastfeed yet, a study
conducted by Italian researchers gives you another really good reason: Babies
who were bottle-fed and had sucked their thumb or a dummy were twice as likely
to have crooked milk teeth as breastfed infants. Breastfeeding appears to
protect against thumb and dummy sucking damage, possibly down to its affect on
mouth and palate muscle development.
